The 2024 presidential election will be a battle between President Trump and California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, according to the prediction of participants in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
Woke Gavin Newsom to Knock Out Sleepy Joe
Even though he made a fiery speech during CPAC in Dallas, Trump didn’t make his 2024 presidential bid official, but he once again hinted strongly at it.
Soon-to-be-80-year-old President Joe Biden and his equally gaffe-prone veep Kamala Harris would theoretically be primary choices for the 2024 presidential nomination. Yet, both have such sliding ratings that the race for leftist nomination may as well be considered wide open.
California Governor Gavin Newsom hasn’t declared intentions to run yet, but his actions – in which he targeted with media ads the Republican governors of Florida and Texas, indicate he has nationwide ambitions.
A straw poll conducted at the Dallas CPAC showed Trump is increasingly favored to run by GOP voters. Also, a plurality of the Republican electorate actually expects Trump to face Gavin Newsom in the 2024 presidential vote.
The results from the CPAC straw poll were announced at the conference on Saturday by pollster Jim McLaughlin, as cited by The Daily Mail.

Conservatives at CPAC conference believe Gavin Newsom will be the Democratic runner in 2024 – as straw poll finds majority who want Trump as Republican nominee has grown to 69 percent, increasing his lead over Ron DeSantis

Trump’s Lead Grows
While the attendees of the Republican conference forecasted Newsom would replace Sleepy Joe, they have also given big reasons to believe the California governor would face Trump.
The straw poll at CPAC actually gave Trump an even bigger advantage than before over his most viable rival for the 2024 Republican nomination, Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis.
This time, POTUS 45 scored 69% compared with 24% for DeSantis, a lead of 45 points.
Back in February, during the CPAC in Florida, which seems to have reflected DeSantis’ home state advantage, the results from the straw poll were 59% for Trump and 28% for the Florida governor, a lead of 31 points.
McLaughlin told the conference audience that in spite of the narrative of the mainstream media that Trump’s influence within the Republican Party is “waning,” that is not the case – “not at all.”
The pollster emphasized that Trump is actually getting “more popular than ever.”
The poll also found, if for some reason Trump remains out of the 2024 presidential race, Ron DeSantis would be “the overwhelming favorite” to replace him, with 65% of the CPAC participants choosing him.
Interestingly, the second ranked in such a scenario is a person who has never indicated presidential ambitions – President Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr. He received 8% of the attendee votes.
The other potential candidates for the GOP’s presidential nomination in 2024 scored lower.
Texas US Senator Ted Cruz remained at 2%, Trump’s ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former South Carolina Governor and US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, each got 1%.
Trump’s former veep, Mike Pence, scored only 0.3%.
Attendees of CPAC Dallas think 2024 will be a matchup of Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and Donald Trump.
