To say that Joe Biden’s State of the Union address was poorly received by much of the United States would be an understatement. The president used this address to puff himself up, attack Republicans, and paint a rosy image that just isn’t reflective of where the country stands today.
In fact, Biden’s remarks were so inflammatory last night that many Republican lawmakers stood up mid-speech and began shouting at him. On a few occasions like this, the president timidly tried to walk back some of what he said.
Following Biden’s State of the Union address, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Sanders gave the formal GOP response, as documented by NBC News.
Critical Points Made By Sanders
Gov. Sanders, in her response to Biden, stressed the importance of Republicans having a “new generation” of leadership in the party. In making this point, the Arkansas governor also warned about the failures that have ensued with the current president’s leadership.
Specifically, Sanders stressed that Biden chose to ultimately bow to the “woke mob,” rather than leading as the moderate that he presented himself to be during the 2020 presidential election.

The governor of Arkansas later spoke about how certain dynamics in America have shifted since Biden took over. Specifically, this dynamic shift deals with the dividing line in the United States not being about left vs. right anymore, but rather about “normal” vs. “crazy.”
Sanders’ response to Biden was appreciated by many Republicans. Her calls for a new generation to take over leading the GOP also come as the party gets ready to determine which candidate they will nominate in the 2024 presidential election.
A Chance for Generational Leadership Change in the GOP
In the 2024 presidential election, at least a handful of Republicans are expected to enter the race. Many are younger than former President Trump, who already announced his candidacy back in November 2022.
Nominating a candidate who is not in their 70s or 80s is one step the Republican Party can take towards achieving a generational leadership change. Since Biden’s time in office, many Americans have vocalized support for age caps on who can hold certain positions in office.
It will be a stark contrast to have the youngest Governor in the country, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, give the rebuttal to the oldest President in history as calls come from both parties for generational change.

The months and years ahead will ultimately reveal whether or not Republicans move forward and bring younger generations into the party’s leadership roles.
