Yesterday, 2020 frontrunner Joe Biden traveled to Hanover, New Hampshire in order to continue campaigning for the position of the United States president. Over the past few weeks, Biden’s campaign has struggled in the wake of various gaffes about serious events, such as the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. and even his own time as vice president.
A Quick Review of Biden’s Newest Blunders
The aforementioned blunders, in addition to many others, have caused Democrats to cringe and question whether or not their frontrunner would be competent enough to spar with President Trump in a general election.
If yesterday’s event was designed to better Biden’s image, it failed miserably. During the frontrunner’s time in New Hampshire, he made a series of new blunders; these blunders include alleging that “40” children were killed at Kent State by the National Guard in 1970 and claiming that under his presidency, healthcare premiums will “increase” for the middle class. In actuality, four children were killed during the event Biden referenced, although his claim that healthcare premiums will increase was perhaps a Freudian slip instead of a gaffe.
However, Fox News reports that Biden’s most shocking statement of all involved asking audiences to image if Obama were assassinated in 2008.
Biden’s cringeworthy assassination remark came during a town hall where he discussed his personal heroes. The former vice president cited Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., both men who were tragically assassinated.
Prior to yesterday’s event in New Hampshire, Biden also made a blunder regarding the decade in which Kennedy and King were killed; while Biden claimed the assassinations happened in “the late 70s,” both men were assassinated in the 1960s.
The frontrunner attempted to express the pain he felt after the deaths of Kennedy and King by asking his audience to consider what America would look like if someone had assassinated Obama in 2008.
In Biden’s own words:
“My two political heroes were Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. My senior semester, they were both shot and killed. Imagine what would have happened if, God forbid, Barack Obama had been assassinated after becoming the de facto nominee. What would have happened in America?”
Even for Biden, this is absolutely terrible and the reactions from the American people have proven as much. Members of Biden’s campaign have attempted to clean up the mess and claim that media sources are taking the frontrunner out of context, but his words were loud and clear.
It’s actually tough to believe that someone could make this many gaffes in one speech, especially after all of Biden’s previous blunders. It’s also tough not to wonder if Biden is purposefully misspeaking for some bizarre reason.
What do you think about Joe Biden’s latest gaffes and his assassination remark? Do you think the assertion of increasing healthcare premiums for the middle class was a Freudian slip?
