Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, accused Republicans of promoting illegal immigration by telling people the southern border is open.
Many GOP lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, asked Mayorkas to resign from his post. However, Mayorkas pushed back against the criticism, claiming he has a lot of work to do, so he will continue in his office.
Mayorkas Lied to Americans for Political Gain
Mayorkas noted Republicans are making the border crisis worse by politicizing the issue. According to him, smugglers are using Republicans’ narrative of open borders as they are marketing this narrative among potential illegal immigrants.
Recently, Mayorkas came under severe scrutiny from Republicans when the Heritage Foundation revealed emails that showed the secretary knew no illegal Haitian immigrant was whipped at the southern border last year.
On September 24, 2021, assistant secretary of DHS public affairs Marsha Espinosa sent a link to a news article to Mayorkas, which quoted the photographer who took the images of border agents pushing back Haitian immigrants.
The photographer claimed he did not see any border agent using whips to deter immigrants. However, Mayorkas still propagated a false narrative with then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

Back then, Mayorkas claimed the behavior of the border agents did not reflect the reality of America. Furthermore, the secretary asserted the actions of the border force depicted systematic racism in the United States.
Even though Mayorkas defended border agents earlier during his press briefing with Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz, he still changed his opinion when he had to comment on the border incident with the White House officials.
Republicans Seek to Impeach Mayorkas
The latest emails from Mayorkas urged House Republicans to call their leader, Kevin McCarthy, to start the impeachment process against Mayorkas.
Republicans believe Mayorkas should be impeached immediately, as he was informed no border agent used whips against illegal immigrants, but still, he lied to Americans.

GOP Congressman Andy Biggs claimed Mayorkas insulted his own employees for political gain, so his administrative career should be over.
Likewise, Congressman Jim Jordan stated Mayorkas needs to be impeached as he made America borderless. Jordan is expected to lead the House Judiciary Committee after the Republican’s election victory.
Though he claimed that he would take any initiative against Mayorkas with the consent of the rest of the Republican lawmakers. If Republicans win the House in next month’s midterm elections, they are likely to pursue the impeachment immediately.
Although some Republicans have also shown their interest in impeaching Biden on the border crisis, most of the congressional allies of McCarthy think Mayorkas should be the first official to be impeached on the border crisis.
The Office of Professional Responsibility already found out no border agent used whips against illegal immigrants. Though the investigations established some agents still used offensive language against immigrants.
