The primary season of the 2020 presidential election has been extremely revealing on multiple levels. From the Green New Deal to Medicare-for-All, it’s very clear that Democrats are pursuing the route of bold, radical reform.
The problem with this is that what Democrats are proposing is extreme and unrealistic. Furthermore, it will not appeal to a nation of people from multiple political backgrounds. Certain Democrat candidates are able to get applause and support during the primaries, but the dynamics change during a general election.
At this time, the latest significant change which Democrats are pushing for involves discontinuing the use of straws and the consumption of hamburgers. 2020 Democrat Pete Buttigieg views straws and hamburgers as problematic and complicit in the plight which he refers to as climate change.
Fox News reports that Buttigieg conveyed this message during a sit-down with CNN on Thursday.
Dissecting Buttigieg’s Message to the American People
Buttigieg, like many Democrats, believes that climate change is an existential crisis. As such, he has his own ideas in regards to the best measures to take. Over this past week, talks of “population control” have surfaced, something which is facing a fair amount of backlash. Buttigieg, however, is taking a different approach and maintains that Americans need to all work to combat climate change.
Ultimately, Buttigieg opined that people in this country associated climate matters with personal guilt. He then proceeded to list certain actions which he views as complicit in the face of climate change:
“You know, from using a straw to eating a burger. Am I part of the problem? In a certain way, yes…but the most exciting thing is that we can all be part of the solution.”
Additional remarks involved Buttigieg calling for Americans to embrace his climate plan and “[summon] the energies of this country to do something unbelievably hard.” Finally, the 2020 Democrat likened his concerns of climate change to significant historical events, such as the Great Depression and World War II.
Green New Deal 2.0
Buttigieg’s assertions that Americans should cease to eat burgers and use straws ring eerily similar to components of the Green New Deal. Ridding the country of gas-fueled cars and airplanes is equally as ridiculous as claiming that consuming hamburgers is dangerous to the environment.
Quite frankly, these remarks from Buttigieg simply show how out-of-touch the Democrats are. Many Americans love hamburgers and the convenience which comes along with using straws. Pointing the finger at people and telling them that burgers and straws makes them “part of the problem” isn’t the wisest strategy for a politician who wants to win over voters.
