Florida’s popular Republican Governor Ron DeSantis completed his crackdown on the woke Disney Company by signing a bill that allowed him to take over the far-left corporation’s special district that is the home to Disney World.
Wokeism Lost the Florida War
The war between Disney and the DeSantis administration in Florida, which has now ended in the former’s total defeat, broke out a year ago. This was after the Republican governor and the GOP-dominated state legislature prepared to pass the Parental Rights in Education Act.
The state law, which has been wrongly described by the mainstream media as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, prohibited Florida teachers from discussing “gender” and sexuality with their students through the third grade.
Pushed by woke advocates, Disney took a stance against the anti-Marxist law, inviting DeSantis’ wrath. Florida reacted immediately by stripping the company’s control from its Reedy Creek district where it enjoyed various corporate benefits for half a century.
The law that eliminated Disney’s control over the special district left two options to Florida’s government – either dissolve it altogether or assume control over its management while preserving Disney World.
As the former option would have required the locals in two Florida counties to start paying for police and emergency services covered by Disney, and to assume $1 billion in corporate district debt, the DeSantis administration has chosen the latter option.
The new law empowers the governor to appoint the five-member board governing the Randy Creek Improvement District. It stipulates that only people without a relationship with Disney over the preceding three years could be appointed to the body, The Daily Mail reported.
The bill that DeSantis signed also requires Disney to pay some $700 million in debt and taxes.

Florida’s First Children Won’t Go to Disney World Soon
Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, Florida’s GOP governor, who is believed to be announcing a presidential run in May, declared the “end” of the “corporate kingdom.”
He thus enabled the government of the Sunshine State to wield total power over the formerly tax-exempt district, which was set up in 1967 and covered the entire Walt Disney World Resort.
At the signing ceremony, DeSantis declared his state to be “the new sheriff in town,” and called upon the public to “buckle up” because there was much to be done with the now-former Disney district.
The governor pointed out Disney would no longer get any special treatment in Florida – not unlike other entertainment parks in the state. He criticized the 1967 arrangement as “unhealthy” since it caused Florida and Disney to be “attached at the hip.”
Until the two laws of the DeSantis administration, Disney was able to run the Reedy Creek District, a zone of 40 square miles in Orlando, as a county government.
Meanwhile, in an interview aired after the bill signing ceremony, Florida’s First Lady, Casey DeSantis, recalled how she and the governor married at Disney World in 2009, having no idea it would one day turn “woke.”
Casey DeSantis declared further that she probably would not take her children to Disney World again “until things change” in the world-famous theme park. Under the newly signed law, the Reedy Creek Improvement District will be renamed the “Central Florida Tourism Oversight District” as of June 1, 2023.
