Catholic University HONORS Banned Pelosi—Archbishop Humiliated…

A California Catholic university has invited Nancy Pelosi—a politician banned from receiving Communion for her radical abortion advocacy—to address graduates, sparking outrage among faithful Catholics who see this as a brazen rejection of Church teaching and moral authority.

Story Snapshot

  • Notre Dame de Namur University in California announced Nancy Pelosi as May 2, 2026 commencement speaker despite her pro-abortion, pro-LGBT stance
  • Pelosi was banned from Communion in 2022 by San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone for her “manifestly grave sin” supporting abortion
  • The Catholic institution’s president praised Pelosi’s advocacy as aligning with university values, ignoring her defiance of Church doctrine
  • Decision occurs within Cordileone’s own archdiocese, amplifying controversy and raising questions about Catholic institutional integrity

Catholic University Honors Politician Banned from Communion

Notre Dame de Namur University announced on April 11, 2026, that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will deliver the commencement address at its May 2 graduation ceremony. University President Dr. Beth Martin praised Pelosi’s public service career, claiming her presence “powerfully affirms the impact of faith-inspired education.” The decision places NDNU at the center of controversy, as Pelosi remains one of America’s most vocal supporters of unrestricted abortion access, directly contradicting Catholic teaching that procured abortion is “gravely contrary to the moral law” and has been condemned since the Church’s first century.

The invitation is particularly provocative given Pelosi’s history with the Archdiocese of San Francisco, where NDNU is located. In 2022, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone formally barred Pelosi from receiving Holy Communion after repeated private warnings about her abortion advocacy went unheeded. Cordileone cited canon law 915, which prohibits Communion for those who “obstinately persevere in manifest grave sin.” Pelosi subsequently defied this directive by receiving Communion at the Vatican during a June 2022 meeting with Pope Francis, escalating tensions between her political activism and religious obligations.

Pelosi’s Record Contradicts Fundamental Catholic Values

Pelosi’s legislative record demonstrates consistent opposition to pro-life measures. She voted against the 2023 Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would have required medical care for infants surviving abortion procedures. She called the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade “outrageous” and has described opposition to abortion as “sinful” in 2023 remarks. These positions represent not merely political disagreement but fundamental rejection of Catholic moral teaching on the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death, a doctrine Pope St. John Paul II declared impossible for faithful Catholics to contradict through legislation or votes.

Beyond abortion, California Catholic Daily notes Pelosi’s aggressive support for LGBT initiatives that conflict with Church teaching on marriage, family, and human sexuality. Her comprehensive advocacy for progressive social policies places her at odds with traditional Catholic values on multiple fronts. For conservative Catholics who value doctrinal fidelity and institutional integrity, NDNU’s decision represents capitulation to secular political correctness over adherence to timeless moral truths. This undermines the university’s mission as a Catholic institution and creates scandal by suggesting compatibility between Pelosi’s positions and authentic Catholic identity.

Pattern of Compromise Within Catholic Higher Education

NDNU’s invitation follows a troubling pattern at Catholic universities accommodating pro-abortion politicians. Pelosi previously addressed graduates at the University of San Francisco in 2019, and that institution honored pro-abortion figure Leo T. McCarthy in earlier years. The Cardinal Newman Society, which monitors Catholic institutional fidelity, has repeatedly urged universities to withdraw invitations to speakers who publicly contradict Church teaching, arguing such honors cause scandal and confuse faithful Catholics about non-negotiable moral principles. Patrick Reilly of the organization emphasized that universities risk undermining their Catholic identity when they prioritize political celebrity over doctrinal consistency.

NDNU’s board includes five Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur among its fifteen members, giving the religious order significant influence over university decisions. Founded by the Sisters in 1851, the institution emphasizes social justice and service rooted in Catholic tradition. However, critics argue that redefining “justice” to accommodate abortion advocacy—which ends innocent human life—perverts authentic Catholic social teaching. The decision occurs during celebrations of the Sisters’ 175th anniversary in California, timing that amplifies disappointment among Catholics who expected institutional leaders to honor their heritage by defending life rather than platform its most prominent political opponents.
