DHS Official FIRED Over Dating Profile—Harasser Gets Promoted…

A Department of Homeland Security official who accused her superior of sexual harassment lost her job over an online dating profile, while the man she accused—who later admitted to having a “Nazi streak”—received a promotion to another federal agency.

The Double Standard in Federal Response

Julia Varvaro, 29, served as DHS deputy assistant secretary for counterterrorism until April 22, when she was placed on administrative leave after reports emerged about her profile on a dating website. The agency acted within hours of the revelation. This swift action stands in stark contrast to how officials handled her sexual harassment complaint against Paul Ingrassia months earlier. Varvaro filed a human resources complaint last year accusing Ingrassia, then the White House liaison for DHS, of inappropriate conduct during a work trip to Florida. She withdrew the complaint days later out of fear of retaliation.

What Happened in Florida

According to the complaint obtained by Politico, Ingrassia allegedly canceled Varvaro’s hotel room reservation during a work trip to Florida, forcing her to share a room with him at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando. Varvaro protested but agreed rather than create a scene in front of colleagues. She later told multiple people that Ingrassia’s conduct interfered with her ability to perform her job. Trump nominated the 30-year-old Ingrassia to lead the Office of Special Counsel, which handles workplace harassment and discrimination claims. He withdrew when leaked messages surfaced showing him using racial slurs and stating he had a “Nazi streak.”

Career Outcomes Diverge Sharply

Despite withdrawing from his nomination after damning messages emerged, Ingrassia secured a position as deputy general counsel at the General Services Administration. A White House official called him “a very helpful addition to GSA.” His attorney denied the allegations and claimed the leaked texts were either AI-generated or written in jest. Meanwhile, sources told the Daily Beast that Varvaro’s suspension was for show and she will not return to DHS. Varvaro earned her doctorate in Homeland Security in 2024 and denied having a profile on the dating website, attributing the allegations to a disgruntled ex-boyfriend. She received no investigation or second chance before her career ended.
