Florida Governor Launches Independent Investigation Into Trump Assassination Attempt

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has ordered an independent state investigation into the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, citing concerns over potential conflicts with the ongoing federal probe. The attack, which took place at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course, is being investigated by both federal and state authorities. The state investigation, led by Florida's Office of Statewide Prosecutor, will operate alongside the federal effort, with the aim of pursuing the most severe charges possible, including attempted murder.

DeSantis announced the probe during a press conference on September 17, where he expressed doubts about the objectivity of federal investigators, particularly given the Department of Justice's ongoing prosecution of Trump for unrelated charges. "The state has a strong interest in ensuring justice is served and that this investigation is handled thoroughly," DeSantis stated, adding that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will be involved in the investigation. He emphasized that his administration would prioritize transparency, contrasting this investigation with previous high-profile cases, such as the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, where the federal government’s findings have been criticized for their lack of disclosure.

The suspect in the attack, Ryan Wesley Routh, was apprehended shortly after the incident. Routh, a 58-year-old convicted felon, allegedly camped near the golf course with a scoped rifle for over 12 hours, waiting for Trump. Fortunately, the plot was foiled by Secret Service agents before Routh could fire any shots. Authorities reported that Routh was discovered with a loaded SKS-style rifle, a camera, and other supplies, indicating he was well-prepared for an extended wait. He fled the scene after being spotted and was later arrested in a neighboring county.

At the federal level, Routh faces charges related to illegal gun possession due to his prior felony convictions and for possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. These charges carry significant penalties, but DeSantis' investigation could bring additional charges under state law, including attempted murder, which could lead to a life sentence if convicted.

DeSantis raised concerns that the federal investigation, which is being overseen by the FBI and the Department of Justice, may be compromised by political motivations. “Given the DOJ’s role in prosecuting President Trump in other matters, there is a legitimate concern about impartiality,” DeSantis remarked. He further noted that state prosecutors could pursue charges that the federal government might not, ensuring that the suspect faces the most severe possible consequences.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, who will supervise the state investigation, reiterated that the probe would be thorough and swift. “We will spare no resource in this investigation,” Moody said, vowing that the state would uncover every detail of the assassination plot. The FDLE Commissioner, Mark Glass, echoed these sentiments, pledging that state law enforcement would "hunt for the truth" in this case, regardless of any federal actions.

The FBI, meanwhile, has conducted several search warrants related to Routh’s residence and possessions, but so far, no motive has been disclosed. Routh invoked his right to legal representation during his federal court appearance, and his attorney has yet to comment on the case. While federal authorities continue their own investigation, the state’s parallel probe seeks to bring swifter and harsher charges against the suspect.

This marks the second assassination attempt on Trump. DeSantis referenced this history, drawing parallels to a prior attempt during Trump's presidency, which also sparked a federal investigation. As the nation awaits more details, DeSantis has assured Floridians that his administration will provide clear and comprehensive updates on the investigation's progress.
