In a display of unwavering vigilance, United States Capitol Police officers successfully apprehended a man armed with a machete and a knife on the East Front of the U.S. Capitol. The incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon, serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present need for security around our nation’s legislative buildings.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Jose Leonardo Marquez, exhibited unusual behavior that caught the attention of a USCP officer. Marquez was seen pacing and then sitting on a ledge on the east side of the Capitol. His actions prompted the officer to engage him in conversation, during which a brick was discovered in his pocket. Upon the officer’s request, Marquez discarded the brick and also placed a knife he had been carrying onto the ledge.

The situation escalated when the officer noticed the handle of a machete concealed under Marquez’s clothing. With swift action, the officer drew his service weapon and commanded Marquez to raise his hands. Compliance from the suspect allowed the officers to safely confiscate the machete and proceed with the arrest without further incident.

Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger praised the officers for their keen intuition and dedication to ensuring the safety of everyone in the vicinity of the Capitol. This arrest underscores the continuous threats faced by those who protect our democratic institutions and the importance of their role in maintaining order.

While the investigation into Marquez’s intentions is ongoing, authorities have reported that there is no current evidence suggesting he was targeting members of Congress. The Capitol has been relatively quiet, with both the House and Senate on break for the holidays, resuming sessions in early January.

Marquez faces serious charges, including Carrying a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon. These charges reflect the severity of bringing weapons onto the grounds of such a significant federal establishment.

This arrest follows another recent security breach last month when Capitol Police detained a man carrying a rifle near the Capitol. That individual, Ahmir Lavon Merrell, was found to have multiple charges against him, including Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Activities. It is clear that the Capitol Police are on high alert and prepared to act decisively to neutralize any potential threats.

The commitment of the Capitol Police to safeguarding the heart of American democracy cannot be overstated. Their proactive measures and readiness to respond to suspicious activities ensure that the Capitol remains a symbol of freedom and governance, protected from harm.
